SGS50 Committee Meeting

22nd March 2006

A committee meeting was held on Wednesday 22nd March 2006 in the Library, SGS, at 8.30pm.

Apologies were received from Valerie Lindsay, Doreen McGarrigle, Austin and Jean Hunter.

The minutes from the last meeting were distributed and matters arising were discussed:

Action 1: Heather to ask Jean Hunter for Lorna Stevenson’s contact details for the ladies hockey.

Action 2: Valerie is to report on the menu for the gala ball at the next meeting.

Heather has e-mailed all contacts with known e-mail addresses. Mr Lacey has a letter ready to be distributed to current parents which Heather will adapt as a letter for all those contacts with no known e-mail addresses.

Action 3: Mr Lacey to send Heather an electronic copy of the letter, and send the letter to all parents.

Action 4: Heather to post a letter to all other contacts we have with no e-mail address, based on the letter.

There are special rates available at Jackson’s Hotel for those going to the Ball. Valerie will confirm these at the next meeting.

The House Captains have been contacted re help on the Saturday. It’s not yet clear what this will consist of due to exam pressures prior to the event.

Robert Boggs is unable to be the auctioneer at the Ball. Valerie has approached Mr George McGerrigle to do it and he has kindly agreed.

Rev. Paul Dundas has agreed to take the Sunday service. This has all been agreed with Christchurch.

Stephen has the funding application form almost complete and will send it off as soon as possible.

Avril reported that 155 tickets have been sold at present and that sales have started to increase again after a lull. This led to talk of a press release before Easter. It was decided to get a photograph of the first Head Boy and Girl alongside the present Head Boy and Girl with an article informing people of the events and advertising the tickets, as well as appealing for memorabilia.

Action 5: Mr Lacey to ask Ms Winkleman-Byrne, the school’s PR officer, to get in contact with the papers.

It was also suggested that Jackson’s Hotel be approached to see if they could help with some publicity for the event since it would be one of the first in their new large venue.

Action 6: Heather to ask Valerie to contact Jackson’s about publicity.

Action 7: Avril is to contact Celia (first Head Girl) to get her to arrange a time for a photograph with Norman (1st Head Boy) and the present Head Boy and Girl.

Action 8: Stephen is to contact Alan McWhirter of the PSNI to let him know the date of the open event on the Saturday.

Philip Faithful suggested that a letter be sent to SDC asking for funding. Stephen has agreed to write to the Chairman.

Action 9: Stephen to contact SDC re funding.

A list of those who should receive complimentary invitations to the Ball was started. The Committee are asked to consider any others before the next meeting. The list so far:

Mr J. Wilson (former Headmaster)

Mrs S Todd (wife of former Headmaster)

Mrs Britton (at the original opening of the school)

Mrs Helen McFarland (artist – painted prints)

Mr Pat McColgan (Chair, Board of Governors)

Finally, Stephen mentioned that current pupils had been asking if they could attend. It was decided that it would be open to this year’s Upper Sixth form.

A date for the next meeting was arranged for Wednesday 3rd May at 8.30pm.
