SGS50 Committee Meeting

15th June 2005 @ 8.30pm

A meeting of the SGS50 organising committee was held on Wednesday 15th June 2005 at 8.30pm. Those present were Stephen Birkett, Heather Sayers, Lewis Lacey, Avril Pollock, Austin and Jean Hunter, Norman King and Philip Faithful. Apologies were received from Vicky Stirling and Valerie Lindsay.

The minutes of the last meeting were discussed and a change to them was agreed. Austin and Jean Hunter had not agreed to take responsibility for getting in touch with all former teachers of the school. This was discussed at the last meeting and it was agreed that former teachers should be contacted. It was also noted that the brass band arranged for the fete was St Joseph’s Concert Brass and not Strabane Concert Brass.

Action 1: Heather Sayers to change the minutes to reflect these points.

The issue of contacting past teachers was further discussed.

Action 2: Heather Sayers to contact Leslie Gourley to find out if he has any contacts with former teachers.

Action 3: Stephen Birkett to contact Ann Keith about the same issue.

Matters Arising:

Summer Ball:

Discussion about arrangement for the summer ball took place. It was decided to leave menu organisation until nearer the event. Tickets will be available after the Christmas school break. It was decided to sell tickets by as many means as possible – contacting representatives from each year, contacting individuals, selling by table/single. It was decided to keep 20/30 tickets aside as complimentary tickets for special guests. The band has been booked for £250. Prizes have to be organised for the draw.

Action 4: Valerie and Avril are to visit Jackson’s to find out the size of the room (capacity), price of the meal and to establish the number of people it can accommodate.

Action 5: Stephen to call for volunteers to sell tickets to their different year groups via the website.

Golf:

Hazel Faithful is organising a golf event in Newtownstewart Golf Club on Friday 30th June 2006.

Fete:

It was suggested that stalls/artists should be viewed at Strabane Fair Day on 25th June to see if there was anything suitable for the fete. Roisin Connolly is the contact in SDC.

Action 6: Philip is to visit the Fair in Strabane and report back.

Philip suggested bringing along a few 1950s cars to exhibit, along with other memorabilia from that era. Mr Lacey kindly agreed to coordinate the memorabilia and its display in the Assembly Hall.

The men’s hockey match is to be organised by Austin and Philip, with each one recruiting their own team. Ladies hockey was discussed.

Action 7: Jean is to talk to Lorna Stevenson about organising 1 or 2 teams.

The ladies hockey is to take place at 3pm, followed by the men’s match at 4pm.

Action 8: Mr Lacey is to look for the Gourley Shield.

It was decided to hold the fete between 2pm and 6pm, with the barbecue from 4-6pm. Arrangements for the BBQ were discussed.

Action 9: Austin and Jean Hunter are to ask Andy Blair about borrowing a large barbecue.

Former Headmaster – Mr Wilson:

Mr Wilson has written to Stephen saying that he is unlikely to attend the celebrations and sending his congratulations and best wishes for the event and the supporting website.

Church Service:

Christ Church has been confirmed as the venue for the Sunday service.

Action 10: Valerie is to contact the Rev Wilson re the conduct of the service and, if he is unavailable, find out who would be eligible to take the service in his absence.

Action 11: Stephen to ask Ann McMahon for contact details for Des Sinnamon.

Action 12: Avril to find out contact details for Eric McKimmon.

Action 13: Stephen to ask staff if there are any other former pupils who are members of the clergy.

Action 14: Mr Lacey to ask local ministers who serve on the Board of Governors.

It was decided to invite clergy who were directly related to the school to take part in the service, and to invite representatives from all denominations in the town to attend as members of the congregation.

Any other business:

Heather Sayers is to take over the management of the website during the summer months, and update the database.

Action 15: Heather to e-mail the list of former pupils to date to the committee members.

The Parent’s Association already have a calendar planned to celebrate 2006. It was decided to advertise this on the website (£5 plus p+p) with interested parties directed to the school who would then pass on the details to Avril.

Action 16: Stephen is to put up a notice about the Parents Association calendar on the website.

Stephen is planning to organise a Duke of Edinburgh Golden Jubilee hike in the summer of 2007 to Kenya. This would be a 4 week expedition and pupils taking part would be trained and shown how to fundraise. This may turn out to be a joint venture with Dungannon Royal.

The date of the next committee meeting was arranged for Wednesday 23rd November 2006.
