Brainstorming Meeting

2nd March 2005

An open meeting was held in the Assembly Hall on 2nd March 2005 at 7.30pm.

Present: Mr.Stephen Birkett, Mr. Lewis Lacey, Mrs Heather Sayers, Ms Sharon Burke, Ms Amanda Allen, Mrs Roslyn Cole, Mrs Libby Wilson, Mrs Valerie Lindsay, Mrs Elizabeth Taylor, Mr. Norman King, Mrs Avril Pollock, Mr. Austin Hunter, Mrs Jean Hunter, Mr. Philip Faithful and Mrs Hazel Faithful.

The chairperson, Stephen Birkett, welcomed everyone to the meeting and began the meeting by dividing those present into groups to discuss ideas for the jubilee. Groups were asked to consider firstly what we were trying to achieve re the celebrations, and then what ideas we might have for the celebrations themselves.

A number of suggestions were made for why we wanted to celebrate the school’s golden jubilee. These were:

  1. As a means of providing some item of benefit to the school which might not normally be supplied through the usual channels (material gain)
  2. To provide publicity for the school
  3. To provide an opportunity for former pupils and teachers to get into contact again
  4. To celebrate the past and lay down something for the future
  5. Fun and enjoyment – to raise morale/pride in the pupils
  6. Community spirit

There were many suggestions for events, including sports competitions between past and former pupils; fundraising events such as raffles, quizzes, coffee mornings; a dinner dance; a summer ball; a barbecue; a golf day; a church service.

After some discussion, it was decided that all events should be grouped together in “one big weekend” with a range of events taking place at the school itself on the Friday night and Saturday (sports, discos, barbecue), a summer ball in a local hotel on the Saturday evening and ending with a special church service on the Sunday. The weekend felt to be the most suitable was the last weekend in June 2006.

The next meeting of the Steering Committee was arranged for Wednesday 6th April at 8pm to discuss these plans in further detail. All non-steering committee members present said they were happy to join the committee and are most welcome. Heather Sayers is to send out reminders to all members.
