SGS50 Organising Committee Meeting

6th April 2005

A meeting was held to make preparations for the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2006. Those present were S. Birkett, V. Stirling, A. Hunter, J. Hunter, D. McGerrigle, L. Lacey, A. Pollock, V. Lindsay, P. Faithfull and N. King. Apologies were received from H. Sayers.

To begin the meeting, Stephen Birkett outlined the outcomes from the previous brainstorming meeting on 2nd March. It has been decided to hold a celebratory weekend from Friday 30th June 2006 to Sunday 2nd July 2006.

Friday 30th June 2006

A Summer Ball (Black Tie event) will be held on Friday 30th June 2006 in Jackson’s Hotel in Ballybofey. This has already been booked, as has the band – the Silvertones. Thanks to Valerie and Avril for agreeing to organise this event and making these arrangements. Tickets will be available in due course and will cost £25 each. A. Hunter and N. King are to organise prizes for the event and some discussions took place about sponsoring the menu for the ball.

Hazel Faithful is to organise golf on the afternoon of Friday 30th at either Strabane or Newtownstewart golf clubs.

Saturday 1st July 2006

It is planned to hold an Open Day in the school from 12 noon until 7pm on the Saturday with guided tours of the school, a barbecue, a bouncy castle, face painting, bulletin boards, fancy dress and art competitions suggested. Hockey matches between former pupils and staff will be arranged by Austin and Philip. Strabane Concert Brass are to be approached about playing on the Saturday. Valerie is to speak to Lowry Smith about the availability of a field for car parking. The fete coordinator is to be arranged later.

A photographer is to be arranged for both the Ball and the Open Day.

Philip suggested that Mr J. Wilson’s (former headmaster) contribution to the school should be recognised in some way, and is to advise on the dignitaries to be invited. Austin and Jean Hunter are to find out what former teachers would be available to invite.

Sunday 2nd July

A thanksgiving service is to be held in Christ Church in the Bowling Green, Strabane (possibly at 3pm). Valerie Lindsay is to liaise with Rev. Geoffrey Wilson about the booking of the church. It was suggested that former pupils who had become members of the clergy should be asked to take part in the service. Suggestions included Desmond Sinnamon and Eric McKimmon.

Any Other Business: The database of past pupils and their contact details is to be kept up to date by Heather Sayers.

The next meeting was arranged for Wednesday 15th June at 8pm.
