1957 to 1958 School Notes 1957 to 1958 School Notes

REOPENING OF SCHOOL

School was re-opened on 3rd September 1957 after the summer holidays. Fifty new pupils eagerly awaited this day but the, ninety others were less enthusiastic. Owing to the increase in pupils, four new teachers have Joined the staff; Mrs. Gaston, Mrs. Hume, Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Gourley.

One Friday afternoon, the entire School paid a visit to Anew M’Master's production of "Julius Caesar" in the Town Hall. The Hall was packed to capacity, and the resulting discomfort and confusion distracted our attention from the play, which was otherwise enjoyable.

A School Service was held in the Presbyterian Church on the Wednesday before Hallowe'en. The Prefects played a prominent part in the Service, and it was conducted by the Rev. M’Clelland.

In November. Form VI attended a meeting of the Urban District Council in the Town Hall. Accompanied by Miss L. Riddall.  This proved helpful to their History course.

The first-annual Prize Day was held on Friday, 29th November. There was a large attendance of parents and others interested in the School. Rev. M’Clelland presided and the platform party included Mr. Tom Lyons. M.P. and his wife, who kindly presented the prizes.

The Parents' Committee organised a Social Evening in Sion Mills Recreation Hall on Friday. 6th December. Entertainment was provided by the Grammar School pupils.  Strabane Boy Scouts, and Newtown Stewart "Scottish Dancers." Dancing and games followed. During the course of the evening,  a tape-recorder was presented to p Mr. Wilson. on behalf of the Parents' Association. We would line to express our appreciation to the Parents' Association for this generous gift to the School.

On December 17. Forms II. III. IV and VI attended their annual Christmas Party. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, and many thanks must be extended to Mr. Gourley. who acted as master of ceremonies: Miss Quigley. who played the piano, and all other members of the Staff. On the following afternoon, Form 1 had their Party, which also went off successfully,

After Christmas, the Dramatic Society held their Party, attended by the actors and those who helped in any way in the production of "To Be Destroyed - Unopened." and "Tom Sawyer."

A Carol Service was held at the end of the Christmas Term in Christ Church. Several of the pupils took part in the Service, which was conducted by the Rev. Lovell

School re-assembled on 7th January, after an enjoyable Christmas holiday. Two months later, we were all sorry to say farewell to Mr. Agnew, and welcomed Miss Armstrong in his place, as Mathematics teacher. After spending many years as a missionary in India, we hope Miss Armstrong will happy in her new post.

Wednesday, 19th March, was an important day for Form VI, as the Senior French Oral took place. On the following Monday and Tuesday, the Science Practical was held.

On 15th March, a small party, accompanied by Miss Riddall, travelled to Belfast to watch the Women's Hockey International between Ireland and England. Among other places of interest visited, was Queen's University.

Representatives of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy visited the School to give lectures on careers in those Services.

Coming events include a French Tour in July. Thirty pupils are intending to spend a fortnight in the Loire Valley, under the leadership of Miss Quigley.

Next year the School buildings will be much larger. There will be a new Assembly Hall, Laboratory, Classrooms, Cloakrooms and Changing-rooms. A Tennis Court and a new Hockey Pitch will be provided before the new school year begins. Work has actually started on this scheme.
