Sports Day last year was held on June 30th. Owing to the surprisingly fine weather, Mr. Wilson was able to exercise his photographic skill and produce a cine film of the activities of the day. This film has subsequently been seen and enjoyed by the pupils and parents. The prizes were presented to the successful participants by the Rev. W. E. Davey.
As usual there were some changes in the teaching staff:- Miss Williamson, Domestic Science teacher, Mr. Rawlings (who will be returning next year) and Mrs. Anderson, Art teacher left at the end of last year. Mr. Gamble (Maths), Mr. Wright (appointed Assistant Education Officer) and Miss Gilliespie (P.E. teacher) all left during the year. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Miss Gillespie in her new life.
We welcome Mrs. McGaffin, Miss Woodend, Mrs. McCaul and Mrs. McMahon (a former pupil of the school) as their successors.
For all hockey enthusiasts, the completion of the all-weather hockey pitch has heralded a new era in this sphere. Cancelled Fixtures and months without practices are now things of the past.
On the 30th September members of the "0" and "A" level science classes attended interesting and informative lectures in Londonderry. The meeting was sponsored by the British Association of Science
The VI and UVI forms attended the Commonwealth Conference in Dungannon on October 4th.
A party of fifty "musically" minded seniors had the opportunity of hearing, the Ulster Orchestra at the Secondary Intermediate school in Strabane on October 6th. A most enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
On the 21st of October the school (from form J3 upwards) saw extracts of "Macbeth" performed by the Desmond Hoey Theatre Company in the Assembly Hall.
We had an interesting talk on temperance by Dr. Mearns on the 29th of September
Prize Day this year was altended by a large but most welcome contingent of parents and friends. Commander A. W. Anderson was the speaker and Mrs. Anderson presented the various cups, prizes and certificates. Once again we had talks from R.A.F. and W.R.A.C. On the 10th November. Squadron Leader Edginton talked to the senior boys and Major Field to the senior girls.
The preparations for the Christmas House Competitions could only be described as hectic, but miraculously the three houses managed to present their entertainment programmes. They were adjudicated by the Rev. and Mrs. Harrison and the overall
winner was Alexander House.
During March the senior boys had an interesting lecture by a Q.U.B. Professor of Agricultural Chemistry and also an R.U.C. careers talk. On the 18th March the senior boys and girls had Youth Employment Careers Talks.
The Prefects' Concert, held on March 16th attracted a fair number of parents and friends. Like the Christmas festivities, it seemed to suffer from a lack of rehearsal and a firm direction
School ends on the 30th June.
